Hatha Yoga

in Middle River, Towson, and the Greater Baltimore Area

Hatha Yoga is one small piece of the greater Yoga puzzle. There are a few definitions that we understand when it comes to Hatha. One is Ha (meaning sun) tha (meaning moon) shows us that Hatha Yoga can be about balancing - balancing our own internal sun & moon, balancing on our own two feet, balancing our body & our mind. In another definition, Hatha means force - as in the force behind the energy that flows through us, that energy being called prana. In this practice, we move through physical postures in an effort to maintain, vitalize, and/or restore our energy.

As a trained Hatha Yoga teacher, I focus on a therapeutic practice that aims to both gently balance and boldly “force” energy through the body. Modern day yoga has become something that we try to fit into our days, in the same way we sometimes try to fit (or force) our body into a posture. We are modern beings working within an ancient practice. We must not forget that the modern postural yoga is a means to stillness, meditation & ultimate eternal peace.

What is a Hatha style yoga class?

Hatha Yoga, with its adaptable definition, is a practice designed for any body and every body. A good teacher offers many available options throughout class, ensuring that someone who is practicing for the first time can move right alongside someone who is on their mat for the thousandth time.

Stepping into a Vinyasa class is different from a Hatha class which is different from Ashtanga, Yin or Kundalini class. If you’re feeling called to mantra and breathwork at the center of your practice, you might explore a Kundalini Yoga class. If you’re interested in a more restorative version of the practice, you might explore Yin Yoga. I offer a Monday Night Wind Down that blends Yin Yoga with Yoga Nidra which is the yoga of deep sleep & relaxation.

With all of that being said, it is vital to remember that Yoga is so much more than a postural or movement based practice. A well-rounded class, specifically a Hatha Yoga class, will also incorporate meditation, Yogic philosophy, breathwork, and concentration.

Benefits of Hatha Yoga Classes

There are seemingly infinite benefits of a Hatha Yoga class. One of the number one reasons I love practicing yoga is the sense of community that is fostered - something really powerful happens when you get humans together to move & relax their bodies. Further benefits include better balance, increased self-esteem, deeper capacity for breath, pain relief, improved sleep, and greater joint mobility.

Is Hatha Yoga good for beginners?

A Hatha Yoga class is a great channel to learn more about Yoga and is a great opportunity for beginners. If you’re just getting started on your Yoga journey, welcome! I recommend looking for classes that are “all levels” “gentle” or “beginner” classes simply so you do not become discouraged. The practice really is for everyone but you must find your foot in the right door before you open to the abundance that the practice has to offer.
